The sea god Njord has lent his name this sea buckthorn liqueur. Njord was the husband of the winter goddess Skadi. Together with Skadi Njord has fathered children Freya and Freyr.
The marriage foundered with Skadi, because you could not live in the same place. They had previously agreed that Njord was to live in nine nights at Skadi Thrymheim. Skadi should stay three nights at sea on Njord. But because of the gulls screaming Skadi could not sleep in Noatun, and Njord could not endure the howling of wolves.
