The belt buckle is assigned to the Borre style, which is also known as the griffin style. It is a Viking Age style of art from the mid-9th century to the mid-10th century.
The art style developed from the Germanic animal style ornamentation. Mirror-symmetrical heads and animal representations, squares, circles, account ornaments and braided ornaments are expressed here in a characteristic way.
Mythical animals are often associated with geometric braid ornaments.
The Borre style phase of early medieval art also shows mythical animals, triangular heads and raised ears, spherical eyes plastic noses characterize this Nordic-Germanic art style.
