Knitting needle / Large bone sewing needle for needle binding (Nålebinding)

This sturdy knitting needle / sewing needle made from animal bones is mainly used for needle binding (Nålebinding). It differs from modern knitting needles in the hole for threading through it. Unlike modern sewing needles, it is also much wider in circumference and the tip of the needle for needle binding is blunt so that you cannot accidentally poke through the wool yarn.
The knitting needle for needle binding is very suitable for making your own historical clothing such as hats and gloves. The oldest needle-bound finds come from the Stone Age. Nålebinding is therefore much older than knitting or crocheting, so it can be seen as a forerunner of modern handicraft techniques. The finds for needle binding go back to the early Middle Ages, so textiles from antiquity and the Viking Age can also be reconstructed, for example.
Unlike knitting, needle binding uses only one needle. The advantage of this handicraft technique is that no runs can occur, since the individual stitches are 'knotted' during needle binding. Needle binding also cuts the yarn for each row of stitches, so this form of needle work is great for using up leftover yarn. The resulting fabric is also nice and tight.
This needle made of bone can also be used as a large sewing needle, but only for knitted handicrafts with wide stitches or elastic threads, as otherwise it does not penetrate the material due to the blunt point and leaves holes in the fabric due to the width of the large sewing needle.

Suitable for many eras: Stone Age, Antiquity, Early Middle Ages
