Colored art print of the famous Oseberg ship,
In the 9th century deceased rich families were buried in the ships and equipped with everything necessary for the long journey into the realm of the dead. The grave offerings ranged from food and jewelery to slain slaves. The magnificent Oseberg ship with beautiful wood carvings, which the Vikings identify as subtle artists, is assigned to the Queen Åsa.
This is not a seaworthy ship is a coastal vehicle, which is a kind of luxury ship.
Under a burial mound was found in 1904 the grave of a Viking woman from the year 834. This (rich) woman, possibly a queen, was buried in a burial chamber behind the mast of the ship.
This grave find is so far the richest and most important from the Viking Age. The ship is so magnificently decorated it is considered a royal yacht or a ceremonial ship.
The approximately 24 m long ship (Viking longship) has been reconstructed and can be seen in the Viking Museum in Oslo.
