Viking spearhead - decoration (This is not a Practice Spear Head)
Order number: 62.001.AViking spearhead decoration
The Viking spear was used more often than the sword because it was much cheaper to manufacture. The wings, of Franconian origin, limited the penetration of the weapon and guaranteed an effective parry. This spearhead decoration shows the creative mix of Vikings from art and war. At this spearhead you can see the so-called niello effect. The use of an alloy of several metals and sulfur that was rubbed into the scratch minister and then burned. Where the alloy was rubbed into the engraving, it remained black, while the rest of the surface was polished to a bright finish. This decorative spearhead was made using more of today's technology, but still shows a shiny, long-lasting Niello-like effect.
